3:10 to Yuma – James Mangold (2007) ~ ☕☕☕☕

61O2Hbb6pAL._SY445_Gooooooood morning!

Today’s review concerns a movie that surprised me in so many ways: 3:10 to Yuma.

Let’s just assume this fact: the only reason why I decided to watch it was the actors  (Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Logan Lerman).
I say the only reason because, after reading the plot and watching the trailer, it seemed to me just another western – and I am not exactly a western nut -.
But, watching it, I found out that, actually, 3:10 to Yuma (remake of the namesake film of the 1957) cannot be reduced to the label of “western”.

It is so much more.

It is the story of two men – the honest Dan Evans (Christian Bale) who has to escort the super-criminal Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) – , of their trip towards the train that is supposed to take Ben to Yuma, a prison-fortress, of the respect they both end up feeling for each other, of the tangled confluence of events that springs from the meeting of such different lives.

I will be brief because it is not a film you can explain, because every attempt of explanation risks introducing it with banality when this movie is everything but banal.
It is an exciting film in every way, that is able to “talk” about emotions in the middle of a shoot out (I do not mean they chat about feelings, eh, do not misinterpret me), that is able to show us sides of human soul with such an improbable genre as the western is and with just 117 minutes, and that is able to make us anxious through a growing of suspense.

The characters are wonderful, perfectly played and unbelievably intriguing. All of them. No exception.
The technical part, at least to my profane eyes, is very good, from the beautiful photography, to a great direction to the astonishing script.

And then, the end.
It could be not your genre, you could not care about actors, the plot might not interest you much, but, trust me, 3:10 to Yuma deserves to be seen just to be able to appreciate the amazing finale.
An unexpected ending, with many facets.
So melancholy yet so surprising.
An intense end, that will leave you with a bitter smile on your face.
